Haditha Marine Sues Murtha

The Tribune-Democrat is reporting that Justin Sharratt, a former Haditha Marine, is suing congressman John Murtha for remarks he made in May 2006, six months after 24 people were killed in a small Iraqi town. American soldiers, he contended, had killed innocent civilians "in cold blood."

The lawsuit was filed Thursday in federal court in Pittsburgh.

It includes Murtha's statements from nationally televised interviews in 2006:

"There was an (improvised explosive device) attack, it killed one Marine, and then they overreacted and killed a number of civilians without anybody firing at them, That's what you're going to find out."

The lawsuit contends that Murtha violated Sharratt's constitutional rights to presumption of innocence and due process of law.

Murtha, though, seems to be exercising his constitutional rights, the right to remain silent, he has not commented on the suit.

As you remember folks I wrote an article in defense of the Haditha Marines after Murtha made his statements, entitled "Haditha Marines Deserve the Benefit of the Doubt". In that article I clearly pointed out that Murtha and the main stream news media were not giving the Haditha Marines the benefit of the doubt and were clearly portraying them as "guilty until proven innocent".

Now all but one Haditha Marine has been cleared, and that Marine will most likely be cleared too. The media and Murtha have mud on their faces, but hey, what else is new.
