An Arab press report is claiming that al Qaida's chief of operations in Iraq may have been killed on Sunday after U.S. and Iraqi forces surrounded a safehouse where he was staying.
The Jerusalem Post is reporting on its web site:
"At least one Arab television media outlet reported that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the head of the al-Qaida in Iraq, was killed in Iraq on Sunday afternoon when eight terrorists blew themselves up in the in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul."
The Post noted that the report was "unconfirmed."
A second report from the Israeli news service Ynet News offers more details about Zarqawi's possible death, sourcing Arab news accounts:
"American and Iraqi forces are currently checking whether al-Zarqawi's body can be found among the bodies of other al-Qaida members that blew themselves up at a house that was besieged by the forces at the northern town of Mosul."
